Artist Statement

As a ceramicist, my experiences with clay have been not only positive but extremely rewarding. Personally, handling clay is a very primal experience. In many ways it helps to ground me. Nothing quite matches the feeling of engulfing my skin in different combinations of minerals in the name of art.

Much of my work features fusions of anatomical and botanical forms in order to articulate the relationship shared between humankind and nature. While some of these depictions within my work are quite literal, others are expressed in a less physical and indirect manner. The organic materials incorporated into my work often are personal to my experiences as a newly practicing homesteader, such as homemade compost, wood ash, heirloom seeds, and self foraged berries.

I’ve spent a large portion of my life upholding a lifestyle which didn’t align with the natural cycles of life. A recent change of perspective has lended to an overall shift in how I approach my relationship to nature. Although raised on Christian beliefs, I never quite felt my belief system was genuinely held. I recently began to view the natural world as something of higher importance, and therefore sacred. My discovery of pantheism, the belief system which holds that all within the universe is sacred, has been vital in my growing understanding of my perceptions of the natural world.

My work often capitalizes on the duality of humankind by means of addressing the struggles we often face as humans to maintain a fast-paced society we’ve constructed, while also maintaining our connection to the natural world. Although we remain connected to nature in terms of our physical composition, many of us have grown apart from the natural cycles of life. As I continue through my own personal journey of rekindling my relationship with mother nature, I seek to articulate my struggles in doing so within my work and the many delights of the journey in between.
